Dentists may soon have a new way to treat early tooth decay and cavities. According to Disabled World, research at the University of Leeds promises to revolutionize the way dentists treat cavities. The research is not complete yet, but the results from the studies already done give great hope to people who are afraid of the dentist’s chair. Peptide fluid treatments allow dentists to literally paint over the teeth. Regrowth then begins on the affected area of the mouth, replenishing the tooth as though it had never had any damage. Peptide fluid copies the process by which teeth naturally grow. It could mean that people will be less likely to lose teeth in the future. There are great benefits to this process over the current method of fillings. Advantages of peptide fluid: No needles or drills- Peptide treatments means no more drills or numbing needles for those who go to the dentist on a regular basis. That is great news for millions of people who put off going to the dentist yearly because of their fear of needles and drills. No pain- There is no pain involved in peptide treatments. Since the treatment is brushed on, it is no worse than brushing the teeth. Less time consuming- The treatment is one step rather than several steps. Getting the needle, then waiting for the medication to kick in takes a lot of time. The tooth then has to be drilled with the current method. After that, the tooth has to be filled and it has to harden. This takes a lot of time. With peptide, that will no longer be necessary. It also allows dentists to take on more patients. Less costly- The treatment will likely be less costly. Considering the treatment is only one step and less time consuming, it stands to reason that it will be less costly. Filling damage- Fillings do not last forever. They eventually loosen and fall out. That is not the case with the new peptide treatments. These treatments help the tooth regrow damaged areas. It is not just covering the problem area up like fillings. Professor Paul Brunton, of Leeds University, believes that if the same results occur in a larger study group, that the peptide fluid will be available within two to three years. It is a promising treatment that patients as well as doctors will welcome into dentist offices across the United States.
